Good news for apple fans! It’s looks like the iPhone 6 is going to be released sooner than expected. Although Apple hasn’t officially confirmed it, rumors have been circulating that the new iPhone release date could be as early as July this year. One such prediction comes from an analyst from Mizuho Security, Abhey Lamba who based his theory on supply chain trends. According to Lamba, suppliers have already begun to start building new iPhones for Apple in time for a July release. Aside from the shift in supply chain threads, it is worth noticing that Apple has been building an engineering team in Taipei to drive product development. A report from the Wall Street Journal shows that Apple has recently hired around 600 engineers for technical positions in China and Taiwan in order to speed up production schedules. It wouldn’t be hard to believe the rumors since Apple did the same thing last year when they released the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s earlier than expected.
Lamba also stated that the next iPhone would have a larger display screen at a size of 4.7, which is 0.7 inches larger than the iPhone 5. Aside from that, rumors have also surfaced that Apple would finally be releasing a phablet with a 5.5 inch display. Trends of recent smartphone sales indicate that consumers prefer larger screens with displays of at least 5 inches. Jessica Kwee, an analyst of Canalys.com, claims that Apple is in need of a larger screened smartphone in order to remain competitive in the smartphone market stating the statistic that 25% of smartphones shipped in the third quarter last year had displays that were 5 inches or larger. That statistic accounts for about 60 million phones. Although Apple still dominates a large share in the smartphone market, their share fell last year. Last year, the iPhone made up 43% of smartphone sales in the U.S., but the year before that it was 53%.
Aside from having a larger screen, more rumored features include size, color, OS, enhanced Touch ID, and new camera features. It is reported that the cheaper plastic cases on the iPhone 5C will be completely scrapped, and the iPhone 6 will feature three 6mm titanium alloy cases that come in copper, titanium, and slate. The iPhone 6 will be released along with the iOS 8 operating system and newer specs such as a 64-bit A8 processing chip and a Touch ID that is integrated with mobile payment facilities and a larger range of applications. As for camera upgrades, the iPhone will feature a ½.66 inch sensor and an f/20 aperture size.
Some other notable companies such as Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, LG, and Blackberry are all reported to release smartphones sometime this year. Samsung in particular is releasing the Galaxy S5 in April, 3 months ahead of the rumored iPhone 6 release date.
