Samsung Galaxy S5 Launched!

The sequel to Samsung Galaxy S4 has emerged! Launched in Barcelona, Spain last February 24, 2014, the first day of the Mobile World Congress, Samsung released the phone which improves the things we actually treasure and care about. It will be available starting April 11th in 150 countries. The smartphone comes with some new features such as a 16 megapixel camera, a heart-rate monitor, and hybrid auto-focus which are just one of the few features worth checking for.

Samsung Galaxy S5 screen size and resolution

QHD screen with 2560×1440 pixel resolution which seems to be the mother of all rumours were not true. The true specs are a 5.1inches screen with a Full HD (1,920×1,080) resolution. Samsung has only had to increase the size of the Galaxy S5 slightly and it measures 142×72.5×8.1mm and weighs 145g which has much in comparison to the Galaxy S4, which measures 136.6×69.8×7.9mm and weighs 130g.

Samsung Galaxy S5 design

The front of the device shows no visible major improvements. What will interest you most in the front view is the home button that functions as a finger-print reader. The S5 still has a plastic body, uneven surface on the back, while the front is quite similar to its predecessor – the Galaxy S4, but with a somewhat squarer edges. The Samsung Galaxy S5 will be available in four colors: shimmery white, electric blue, charcoal black, and copper gold.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Processor and Memory

S5 is a powerhouse with its quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, which runs at a rapid rate of 2.5GHz. Paired with 2GB of RAM, makes all applications you use runs in a smooth manner. What makes S5 disappointing is it isn’t 64-bit and does not have a Exynos processor with 3GB RAM – that will be probably added in their new release next year.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Camera

The Galaxy S5′s 16MP camera has a LED flash, a new advanced HDR mode and post-shot focusing. Two images are taken when the shutter is pressed. With the new selective focus feature, you can focus on the object and one on the background simultaneously. With Samsung Galaxy S5, you can shoot 4k video, but you need a 4k TV to watch the full res video. Samsung Galaxy S5 camera’s most interesting feature is its super-fast autofocus that is about 0.3 seconds. This is the fastest on any smartphone today as claimed by Samsung.

Battery and OS

Samsung has changed the battery in the Galaxy S5 from the 2,600mAh model in the S4 to a 2,800mAh (that’s almost an eight percent capacity improvement) and with a talk time of 21 hrs. With the Ultra Power Saving mode, your battery can still last for 24 hours even when S5 battery capacity is only ten percent (just imagine how S5 will last at a hundred percent).

Wireless connectivity has been upgraded inside the phone. It supports the fifth generation 802.11ac WiFi and it uses LTE Category 4 standard. In this case, S5 will be compatible with more networks. If you want to improve your download speed, a feature called Download Booster allows you to bond the WiFi and LTE connections simultaneously. Although these wireless technologies offer impressive download speed, you still need to find services that require and support such kind of speed.

Other Features

Samsung has equipped S5 with a fingerprint scanner. This scanner has three amazing purposes which make it unique. First is the finger-print sensor which can recognise up to three separate fingerprints and it takes eight swipes to register, instead of holding down on the home/fingerprint scanner button. Second is the user can authorise PayPal to make payments by unlocking the phone using finger-print recognition. Third is the Private Mode which can only be unlocked by the registered user’s fingerprint which protects important documents. Under the camera module, a heart rate sensor is installed. Along with S Health 3.0, it provides a personal fitness tracker with tools such as pedometer, diet and exercise records and a new built-in heart rate monitor. S5 is also waterproof and dustproof which compares it with Sony’s Xperia phones.

Pricing and availability

There is no announcement on official pricing yet, but these may be in the 550-700USD$. It will be available globally by March. As for Malaysia and other Asian countries, it will be available in stores in three weeks according to a confirmation by a Samsung executive (middle of March).
