Sony Xperia Z1, The best in the league?
Sony have very strongly responded to their rivals in the Smartphone sector unveiling the new Sony Xperia Z1, which in many ways is expected to give a boost to its recent diminished stature in the mobile manufacturing circuit. The Xperia Z1, Sony’s update to the predecessor, namely Sony Xperia Z (which was released in march this year) has improved on a lot of aspect in its bid to become the best phone in the market in this category and thereby attract more sales, however, what’s important to look is whether they have all the necessary changes to achieve their goal.
Sony Xperia Z1
The one-piece aluminium design
The most notable improvement Sony has made in the design of Xperia Z1 is the addition of a single-piece aluminium frame as the skeleton to provide more rigidity to the phone’s structure. Other than that, just like its predecessor, Xperia Z1 boasts of a gorgeous design that can force you to have a second look, every time you see it. Xperia Z1 is around 16% heavier than Xperia Z and has its outer structure made of glass.
The fastest processor adds flamboyancy
Sony Xperia Z1’s prominent features include a 2GB RAM, expandable microSD storage, connectivity via Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC, MHL support of LTE bands and a heap of software, however, the most notable of all is the addition of the fastest processor around in the form of 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 which is bound to improve the working and speed of the Smartphone. One thing is for sure, with Xperia Z1 you won’t have to wait for your device to process your request as it can handle multiple tasks at one go.
Improved water resistance
Sony initially made the inroads into the waterproof mobile phone technology through their Xperia Z and now they have added another ace in their armoury by improving the waterproof technology in Xperia Z1. You no longer have to worry about the headphone jack and Sony has removed the annoying flap covering for the jack.
Further, Xperia Z1 provides you with the dust resistant quality that ensures that the display screen remains clear all the time giving you a better view of the phone’s screen. Sony claims that Xperia has the scratch resistant feature, however, given that it has glass as its outer covering, it remains to be seen if the phone can actually remain unaffected by coins and keys in the pocket.
A bliss for the shutterbugs, One of the Best Cameras in a Smart Phone
With Xperia Z1 Sony has swiftly entered the league of Smartphone manufacturers with great camera quality. Though Z1 has the same 5 inch screen as was in Xperia Z, but what makes it different is the new 20.7 megapixel Exmor RS camera sensor, something which is sure to give you goose bumps if you love a phone with high quality camera.
And that’s not all, Xperia Z1 is equipped with Sony G lens and Bionz image processing to ensure full HD video recording and images as good as the ones shot from a compact camera. Surely, this phone is offering a visual treat to its users. The only gripe, if we look very closely is with Sony’s software to support its camera which leaves artificial uniform colour blocks on external shot, probably due to the over processing of noise reduction algorithm.
The display lacks panache
The big letdown, given the great features and improvements Sony has added to the phone’s external design, is the internal display of Xperia Z1. Sony have continuously shown very little progress in the display section and Xperia Z1 unfortunately fails to break the jinks. While competitors in the android sector have come up with great displays and highly improved display output, Xperia given its other great features, lags far behind on this front.
The onscreen keyboard has the same look as Xperia Z, but the one new and improved feature that stands out is the highly impressive haptic feedback system which is really fun to operate. What makes it more enjoyable is the way Sony have implemented this system on their Xperia Z1 phone.

Sony Xperia Z1 was launched in the Malaysian market on October 4 at a retail price of RM 2399, which puts it in the price range of newly unveiled iPhone 5C and given the great features that Xperia Z1 has on board, the phone is worth the money Sony has put on it.
The company is expecting Xperia Z1to give arch rivals Samsung who recently unveiled their ambitious Galaxy 3, a run for their money, especially since both of them fall in the same price range. It will be exciting to see which phone finally wins the war of the smartphones.
Sony Xperia has a lot of new features and improvements making claims but there is still a little left before Sony can brand their Xperia Z range as the best in the market. A rating of 8.2 for the new Xperia Z1 seems perfect.
