For many years Arsenal have been critisized over their frugality in the transfer market. But Arsene Wenger finally joined the big league of European spending when he obliterated Arsenal’s transfer record with the £42 million (RM216405000) signing of Mesut Ozil. Wenger and Ozil’s German team mate, Per Mertesacker, persuaded Ozil to leave Real Madrid and ignore a superior offer from Paris St Germain to transfer to Arsenal.
Arsenal have also succeeded in trimming their squad this summer, with Denilson, Arshavin, Sebastian Squillaci, Gervinho, Andre Santos, Vito Mannone and Marouane Chamakh have all left this summer.
Mathieu Flamini, who has returned to the club from AC Milan, made his second Arsenal debut as a substitute for Jack Wilshere, but fears about the injury-prone England midfielder’s fitness were allayed by the news he had only been suffering from stomach cramps.
Arsenal beat the Tottenham Hotspurs 1-0 in a game that they pressured from the start. They nearly scored twice in the first 5 minutes but failed to convert. The only goal of the game came in the 23rd minute with Giroud meeting a low near post cross from Walcott. The Spurs kept the pressure up to score and even with their near misses close to the end of the match they were unable to get the ball into the net.
